SOJ DECEMBER CONVOCATION – DEC. 13, 2009

The P.I. Reed School of Journalism will host its own December Convocation ceremony on Sunday, Dec. 13, 2009, in the Mountainlair Ballrooms.

While the SOJ ceremony begins at 9:30 am, graduates are asked to arrive by 8:30 am for line-up. Please report to the registration table in front of the Mountaineer Room on the second floor of the Lair.

The SOJ’s December Convocation ceremony includes a processional of graduation candidates, keynote speaker and student awards. Graduation candidates are formally recognized and cross the stage to shake hands with their program chair and the dean. A WVU photographer will be on hand to take photos of each candidate crossing the stage. Photos can be ordered online after the event. A light reception follows the ceremony.

(Students and families should note that this event is in addition to the WVU December Convocation ceremony. Students are encouraged to attend both events.)

New section of PR 324 for Spring 2010

SOJ co-hosts book launch and panel discussion for Temple's "The Last Lawyer"

Join the WVU P.I. Reed School of Journalism and College of Law for an event celebrating the publication of Associate Professor John Temple’s new non-fiction thriller, “The Last Lawyer: The Fight to Save Death Row Inmates.”

Temple’s book, “The Last Lawyer: The Fight to Save Death Row Inmates,” was recently published by University Press of Mississippi. It’s the true story of a law firm’s fight to save a death row inmate and how an idealistic attorney, Ken Rose, and his diverse band of investigators and lawyers fight to overturn their client’s death sentence. The book chronicles Rose’s decade-long defense of Bo Jones, a North Carolina farmhand convicted of a 1987 murder.

The Nov. 12 book launch and panel discussion, “The Last Lawyer: A Conversation About Justice, Journalism, and the Death Penalty,” will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the WVU Law Center’s Marlyn E. Lugar Courtroom.

The panel will be moderated by WVU College of Law Dean Joyce E. McConnell and will focus on the case covered in the book, issues surrounding the morality and constitutionality of the death penalty and the journalistic process. Panelists include Temple; the book’s central figure, death penalty attorney Ken Rose; West Virginia appellate lawyer, Lonnie Simmons; and Jay T. McCamic, a noted legal expert on sentencing mitigation.

The event, which will include a Q&A session, is open to the public. A book signing and light refreshments will follow.

SOJ hosts accreditation site team Nov. 1-4

Next Sunday through Wednesday (November 1-4), the School of Journalism will host a site team from the Accrediting Council for Education in Journalism and Mass Communications. These five people will be visiting campus and Martin Hall to review our undergraduate journalism program for re-accreditation. This is a very important event for the SOJ.

Currently, only 114 journalism programs in the country are nationally accredited. The fact that we are among this select group is something you can point to with pride on your resume, job applications, and in interviews.

We spent the summer compiling a report for this review, and we are now preparing for the site team members to visit us.

The site team is comprised of 5 people, who are accomplished professors and professionals from around the country. They will be touring the building, visiting classes, and meeting with a number of people, including students. They may even pull you aside in the halls to ask you questions about our academic programs, student support services and facilities!

We’re proud of our school and our students, and we are confident we will receive positive evaluations.

If you have any questions about this visit, please feel free to talk to your professors. And if you are assisting us in some way with this effort—by attending our Sunday night “open house,” meeting with our visitors Monday evening, or serving as a student assistant—we appreciate and are grateful for your participation, which is critical to our success.

Football legends, team owners to discuss "The Business of Sports" at WVU

Oliver Luck, two-time Academic All-American who led West Virginia University to victory in the 1981 Peach Bowl and Hall of Fame linebacker Sam Huff will join two team owners for a discussion on “The Business of Sports” at 6 p.m.., Wednesday, Nov. 4, at WVU’s Erickson Alumni Center.

The football players will join Ken Kendrick, managing general partner of the Arizona Diamondbacks, and Bob Nutting, chairman of the board and principal owner of the Pittsburgh Pirates, in the Wells Fargo Distinguished Lecture Series.

The event, sponsored by WVU’s College of Business and Economics and the College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences, is free and open to the public. Kendrick, Luck and Huff are WVU alumni.

Kendrick was a charter member of the ownership group that founded the Arizona Diamondbacks. He is also heavily involved with WVU. He established a program at the College of Business and Economics for the study of free-market economics and supported construction of the Donald J. Brohard Hall of Traditions at Milan Puskar Center.

Oliver Luck is president and general manager of Major League Soccer’s Houston Dynamo. Previously, he served as CEO of the Harris County-Houston Sports Authority, an organization created to provide financing, construction and management of new stadiums for the Houston Astros (Minute Maid Park), the Houston Rockets (Toyota Center) and the Houston Texans (Reliant Stadium). During his time at WVU he was a Rhodes Scholar finalist.

Sam Huff’s NFL career began with the New York Giants in 1956. Huff is widely considered one of the best linebackers to ever play the game, and in 1960 was the subject of “The Violent World of Sam Huff,” a CBS network television special. Huff was also the first NFL player featured on the cover of Time Magazine. Huff ended his career with the Washington Redskins, and now serves as a color commentator for the Redskins Radio Network.

Bob Nutting is the sixth principal owner in the 123-year history of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Nutting is also a former president of the West Virginia Press Association and is the president and CEO of Odgen Newspapers in Wheeling.

Blogging and interactive journalism class to be offered spring semester

PrnJ 493A, blogging and interactive journalism, will be offered to undergrads at the SOJ beginning spring semester 2010. Blogging and interactive journalism combine solid principles with new media tools. Students in this course will examine the role of blogging and social media in journalism today. They will also analyze and participate in blogs and other forms of interactive media. Students will maintain a focused group blog and learn to integrate the principles of traditional journalism with social media tools. The class will be offered on Tusday evenings from 6-8:30 p.m.

WVU PRSSA to partner with Damon's Bar and Grill for fundraiser on Oct. 27

WVU PRSSA is partnering with Damon’s Bar and Grill to host a fundraiser to raise money for the chapter. Damon’s has agreed to donate 10 percent of all checks of any patron who present a PRSSA flier on Tuesday, October 27 from 4 to 9 p.m. Customers must present the flier to their server in order to benefit PRSSA. Only one flier is needed per table. The group is also selling WVU football T-shirts outside the restaurant for $10. All proceeds will be used for professional development, events and conference expenses. Fliers will be distributed a week prior to the event throughout the downtown campus, in surrounding apartment complexes and via e-mail. WVU PRSSA meets with the Pittsburgh Zoo's public relations and marketing directors

Members of WVU PRSSA had the privilege of meeting with public relations and marketing directors at the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium in Pittsburgh recently. The group learned how the team uses advertisements to attract visitors, promote special events, enhance zoo experience, and generate visitors from the local community and surrounding regions. The group also learned how the team coordinates events as well as other public relations practices.
Overall, the experience allowed PRSSA members to learn real-life experiences, gain networking opportunities and access professional development to prepare for a career in public relations. PRSSA has meetings open for new members every Monday at 6 p.m. in Martin Hall.

Screening for documentary film "Fighting on Two Fronts, The Untold Stories of WWII Black Veterans" Oct. 21

Join SOJ Associate Professor Joel Beeson Wednesday, Oct. 21 at 5 p.m. in the Gold Ballroom at the Mountainlair for a screening of his documentary film, “Fighting on Two Fronts, The Untold Stories of WWII Black Veterans.” The film is about the experiences of African American veterans in a segregated military in WWII. The film is 60 minutes to be followed a panel discussion with three WWII black veterans (two of those in the film). Students are encouraged to attend, especially those interested in documentary film and oral history.

The WVU Philosophy Department will offer a new course in the spring. Phil 293K The Philosophy of Race will be offered on MWF 11:30 a.m.-12:20 p.m.

Course Description: We use the language of race when we describe ourselves or others as white, black, Asian, Latino/a or use other similar descriptions. However, what we are really talking about is often unclear. Is race part of our biology? Is race a cultural phenomenon? Can it simply be reduced to ethnicity? Is it even real? This course explores these questions and other related topics.

Bob Dubill visit rescheduled for Oct. 28 and 29

In honor of the day, The Department of English within the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences at West Virginia University has asked the SOJ’s participation in celebrating our common love of writing!

WHO? Everyone! We encourage everyone with any connection to WVU to submit a piece of writing. We welcome WVU students, teachers, parents, staff, alumni, and retirees; area business owners and neighborhood residents; state legislators; WVU fans; and many more!

WHAT? Every kind of writing! Whether it’s a memo, a story, a video montage, a poster or brochure, a school assignment, a personal letter or e‐mail, a business plan, an audio file, or a photo, everyone writes and everyone has something important to share.

WVU to host study abroad fair

West Virginia University’s annual study abroad fair will be held Wednesday, Sept. 23 in the Mountainlair Ballrooms from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. More than 20 faculty-led spring and summer programs and 31 study abroad exchanges will be featured, with representatives on hand to help students gather the information needed to study abroad. Nineteen other organizations will also be on hand to discuss other travel opportunities. University officials and local travel agencies will provide information on financial aid, travel arrangements, health insurance and foreign health requirements. The SOJ welcomes new incoming students and returning SOJ majors to Martin Hall. As you can see, there were more building improvements made during the summer months – all the ground-floor labs have been renovated and updated!

One major change is that Room G2 is now an open lab for all SOJ students. We are working this week to finalize staffing and will post open lab hours as soon as possible.

Also note that all ground-floor labs will now send print jobs to the “Mar-GroundPool” printer option. The new central printer pool is located just inside G4. Each job will print to the first available printer in that area.

WV Radio Coporation and American Legion Baseball need volunteers

West Virginia Radio Corporation & American Legion Baseball are looking
for volunteers to help during the West Virginia State & Mid Atlantic
Regional Baseball Tournaments. Volunteers will be asked to help sell
tickets, concessions, programs, and help out with parking, along with
several other tasks to help make these tournaments successful. Since
1925, The American Legion has sponsored a nationwide youth baseball
program, and their 2.8 million members have raised millions of dollars
each year for players to learn the importance of teamwork, discipline,
leadership and good sportsmanship. The American Legion sponsors
American Legion Baseball to give players an opportunity to develop their
skills, personal fitness, leadership qualities and to have fun.

The tournaments will be held at WVU’s Hawley Field right next to the
Coliseum. We will need volunteers for the state tournament :

FBI needs volunteer videographer

The FBI is looking for someone with video equipment to record a training session on Aug. 12, 2009 from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. The recording session will include a display of graphic photos as well as the training session. The student will not be able to retain a copy of his or her work, however representatives from the FBI will be happy to write a letter describing what the student did so that her or she may get credit for the experience.
