Apply for the Scripps Howard Foundation Semester in Washington Program internship

The Scripps Howard Foundation Semester in Washington Program is now accepting applications for spring and summer interns. The application deadline is Nov. 2. Semester in Washington brings journalism students to D.C. for reporting
internships of four, 10 or 14 weeks. The program, now in its 11th year, is one of the few in Washington that not only pays a stipend but also provides free housing in furnished apartments.

Interns report for Scripps Howard’s Web-based wire and can report for campus or hometown newspapers or other news organizations. The interns work with an experienced Washington editor to choose, report and edit stories. This summer, interns covered Justice Sonia Sotomayor’s confirmation hearings, a bill signing ceremony at the White House, debates over health care and cap and trade legislation, Iraqi refugees, Palestinian hip hop artists, the future of space travel, changes in the student loan program and more. In the spring, they covered President Obama’s inauguration and the first days of the new administration.

The program is housed by the Scripps Howard News Service. The interns live in one of two furnished apartments near the National Zoo in Northwest Washington. The stipend covers food, transportation and other essentials. It is $2,350 for the 14-week spring and fall programs, $1,800 for the 10-week summer program and $500 for the short course (open only to Hampton University and Florida International University students). Interns must be undergraduates – juniors or seniors – in the semester they are in Washington. Students who have just graduated may apply for the short course. Far more students apply for summer than for spring and fall. Students with superior multimedia skills will be given preference over those without those skills.
Online magazine seeks video editor/intern

Connotation Press, a new Online Art and Literary Magazine, is seeking an intern to edit videos. This internship will provide professional experience with an online magazine. Our videos in need of editing will usually be interviews with artists and footage of live music. We prefer an editor who has and is familiar with their own software, since our monthly deadlines will begin immediately. Connotation Press can provide video editing software, as long as you can quickly familiarize yourself with it. Work times will be flexible, but there will be some crunch times when video footage comes in very close to a publishing deadline; therefore, we need someone who can handle working under tight time frames. In addition to video editing, if you are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an online magazine or the taping of an interview or a live show, you will have the opportunity to work on more aspects of the magazine. Contact Ken Robidoux @ Editor-in-Chief@connotationpress.com
